What Brotato: Primal Dread adds
Primal Dread is a $3.99 DLC for Brotato that needs the base game. It adds the Jungle map with 20 waves, 10 characters, 17 weapons, 40 items, 3 pets and the Evolution stat with its Mecha and Mutation paths.
Primal Dread is Brotato's second paid expansion, released on 2 November 2026, two years after Abyssal Terrors. The pitch from the developers is simple: the last DLC went down into an alien ocean, so this one goes sideways into a dinosaur jungle. Same run length, same six weapon slots, completely different enemy vocabulary.
The base game is still the base game. You pick a potato, you survive twenty waves, you spend materials in a shop between waves, and you try to end the run standing up. Primal Dread does not replace that loop. It adds a second arena, a second wave table, and one new stat that mutates the enemies you are already fighting.
Inside the pack
The store page and the launch announcement agree on the content list, which is rare enough to be worth quoting as a table.
| Content | Amount | What it means in a run |
|---|---|---|
| New map | The Jungle | A prehistoric forest arena with its own enemy set and hazards |
| New waves | 20 | A full run from wave 1 to a boss, separate from the Crash Zone |
| New characters | 10 | Each with a win achievement: Archaeologist to Veteran |
| New weapons | 17 | Including weapons the Mecha path can evolve |
| New items | 40 | Including a fossil set that scales with itself |
| New pets | 3 | Confirmed in the pre-launch post on new weapons, items and pets |
| New stat | Evolution | Splits into Mecha and Mutation, changes enemy behaviour |
| Music and achievements | New tracks, separate list | Achievements are split from the base game's list |
Two numbers on that table get argued about, so here is the sourcing. The launch post lists "17 new weapons" and "40 new items". The earlier October post said "17 new weapons, more than 30 new items and 3 new Pets", which is where the pets number comes from. Both are official; 40 is the number on the store page today.
Jungle is the point
A new map in Brotato is not scenery. It changes what walks at you. The launch post describes packs of dinosaurs charging through the undergrowth, flying dinosaurs, and a new environmental hazard it calls "the dreaded holes". Screenshots from the store page show burrows and dirt mounds in the arena floor, thick foliage at the edges, and enemies emerging from the ground.
That matters because Brotato's difficulty has always come from geometry as much as stats. A pack that charges in a straight line is a different problem from a ranged enemy that keeps its distance, and a hole you can fall into or get pushed toward changes where you can stand. If you want the full breakdown of the arena, it has its own page.
Evolution, in one paragraph
Evolution is the DLC's new stat, and the only genuinely new system in the pack. You push it in one of two directions by picking up drops on the map. Mecha uses mecha parts: your weapons get reinforced, you gain extra stats, and the dinosaurs you fight become mecha dinosaurs that fire lasers and leave oil puddles that slow you down. Mutation uses mutagens, the green flasks dropped by mutant enemies: your items can be copied at random so their effects multiply, and the dinosaurs become acid-spraying mutants.
Both paths make the enemies harder in exchange for making you stronger. That is the whole design in one sentence. The Evolution overview has the full comparison, and the two path pages go into counterplay.
Missing from the pack
There is no new game mode, no endless variant specific to the Jungle, and no separate progression tree. The DLC is content for the existing loop plus one stat. It also does not touch the base game's balance beyond the free 1.2.0.0 update, which every player gets whether they buy Primal Dread or not: Item Set, Nightmare nerfs and eight character buffs.
If you are weighing the DLC against the previous one, the Abyssal Terrors comparison puts the two content lists side by side. If you have not bought either, the base game versus DLC page explains what you already own.
How to read the rest of this site
This site is built around the DLC, not around Brotato 101. Every page answers a question a Primal Dread player actually asks in the first week: which path to pick, which of the ten potatoes fits a first run, why the mutagen drop rate matters, what 1.2.0.1 actually fixed, and whether the whole thing is worth four dollars.
Numbers are checked against four sources: the Steam store page for app 4498220, the official patch notes published under the base game's news hub, the game's own achievement list, and the Steam appdetails API. Where a name is not published anywhere official, the page says so by omission rather than by guessing, and the achievements page shows how the roster can be verified inside the game.
One-line version
Primal Dread is a second arena with a stat that mutates its enemies. If you liked Brotato's loop and wanted a harder, wetter map with a new decision layer, that is the whole pitch, and the $3.99 buys twenty waves of it per character.
