Achievements: what is separate

Quick answer

Primal Dread's achievements are separated from the base game's list, a split the developers credited to a new Steam feature. Ten of them are win-a-run achievements for the new characters, from Archaeologist to Veteran.

Primal Dread's achievements are separated from the base game's, and the developers were pleased about it: the launch post lists "new achievements (but separated from the base game thanks to Steam new feature!)" as a content bullet.

That separation is the most important thing to understand about DLC achievements in Brotato, because it changes what a completionist is looking at. Before the DLC, one list. After it, the base list plus a DLC list, and the DLC list only makes sense to players who own the DLC.

The 200 figure is worth being careful with. It is the total for the game as it stands now, with the DLC installed content included in the list. It is not "200 base achievements plus DLC"; it is 200 entries, ten of which are the new characters.

The ten character achievements

The ten entries are the easiest part of the DLC to verify, because each one is a win condition with the character's name on it.

AchievementRequirement
ArchaeologistWin a run with Archaeologist
ArsonistWin a run with Arsonist
CavemanWin a run with Caveman
DroidWin a run with Droid
Mad ScientistWin a run with Mad Scientist
PoacherWin a run with Poacher
SurvivorWin a run with Survivor
Time ShifterWin a run with Time Shifter
VariantWin a run with Variant
VeteranWin a run with Veteran

That table is also the roster list. If a character is not on it, that character is not one of the ten, and if you have won with all ten, you have seen the whole DLC roster. The characters page uses the same source.

Separation in practice

The separation appears in the game's achievement UI as a distinct group, and on Steam as a DLC-associated list. The practical effects:

You can see DLC progress without sorting through base achievements. Ten win conditions out of 200 is a small fraction; a separate list makes them visible.

DLC achievements do not dilute base completion. If you are working through the base game's list, the DLC entries do not count against you.

The DLC's own store page does not host an achievement list. Checking the DLC's community stats page returns an error page rather than a list, because the entries live with the base game. If you want to see them, look at the base game's achievement page.

Why this is a bigger deal than it sounds

Steam's DLC achievement separation is a relatively new platform feature, and its absence was a long-standing complaint for games with large DLC libraries. In a game with 200 achievements, adding a DLC's worth of entries to a single undifferentiated list makes both lists harder to read: the base completion percentage drops, the DLC goals get buried, and players who own one pack cannot tell which achievements belong to it.

Brotato's use of the feature is a small quality-of-life win that costs nothing and is easy to underestimate. It also makes guide-writing simpler: a page like this one can list the DLC entries as a closed set instead of trying to subtract one list from another.

How to check your own progress

Three steps, no third-party tools:

  1. Open the game's achievement page on Steam (not the DLC's page, which has no list).
  2. Look for the group containing the ten character wins.
  3. Compare against your character roster. Every win you have is one entry; the ten names are the DLC's full set.

If an achievement is missing after a win, the usual cause is a modded client or a run that ended in a way the game did not count as a win. The mods page covers the first; the second is usually a disconnect or a quit before the results screen.

Beyond the ten

It does not list the non-character DLC achievements, because the DLC's public documentation gives the count of new achievements but not their names, and the base game's page is the only place they appear as a set. It also does not give completion percentages, because those move daily and a two-day-old DLC's percentages are noise.

What it does give is the verifiable core: ten named win conditions, a total list size, and the reason the lists are separate.

For the roster those achievements belong to, see all ten characters. For the patch that fixed achievements-adjacent UI bugs, see 1.2.0.1.

Why the ten matter more than the count

A DLC's achievement list is usually a marketing bullet. Here it is the only public roster document: the ten win conditions name every new character, in order, and they are the reason the characters page can list the roster with confidence instead of hedging. If you want to verify a character exists, search the achievement page for its name.
