Brotato: Primal Dread

Is Primal Dread worth $3.99?

Quick answer

At $3.99 Primal Dread is the same price as Abyssal Terrors and adds a full second map with 20 waves, ten characters, seventeen weapons, forty items and the Evolution stat. Buy it if you still play Brotato; skip it if you bounced off the base loop.

Four dollars is a strange price to argue about. It is less than a coffee, and it is also the price at which people expect a certain amount of content, because the base game costs five and contains hundreds of hours.

So the honest framing is not "is it worth $3.99" but "is it worth $3.99 to you, given what you already own".

Four dollars, itemised

ContentAmountHours if you engage with it
New mapThe JungleOne full run per character you try
New waves20A complete run arc, roughly 30 to 45 minutes
New characters10Ten runs minimum, more if you chase wins
New weapons17Changes every shop pool
New items40Changes every shop pool
New pets3A new axis in builds
Evolution statTwo pathsThe reason to replay the map
Music and achievementsNew tracks, separate listCollectible completion

The replay maths is the real answer. A single Jungle run is not four dollars of content; ten characters across two Evolution paths, with a shop pool that includes forty new items, is. If you play Brotato for build variety, the DLC multiplies the pool you build from.

Who should buy it now

You still play Brotato weekly. This is the easy yes. The DLC adds a second arena to the game you are already playing, and the free 1.2.0.0 update has already improved the base game around it.

You finished the base game and wanted more. Also a yes, with a caveat: the Jungle is harder than the Crash Zone in the specific way that matters, which is that it removes floor space. If you finished the base game on a low difficulty, expect a step up.

You play for characters. A qualified yes. Ten characters is fewer than Abyssal's fourteen. If collecting characters is the appeal, the older DLC gives you more per dollar, and the comparison page lays out the numbers.

You want a new mode. A no. Primal Dread does not add a mode. It adds a map, a stat and content for the existing loop.

Who should wait

You bounced off the base game. The DLC does not fix the base loop. If you did not enjoy twenty-wave runs with six weapon slots, the Jungle is the same game in a wetter forest.

You have not finished the base game. The DLC's content assumes you understand shop economy, weapon classes and kiting. Buying it early means learning two things at once, which is why the beginner guide exists.

You want to play with a friend who does not own it. Co-op requires both players to own the content they are using. If your co-op partner is not buying, the DLC is a solo purchase.

Price against price

Primal Dread costs the same as Abyssal Terrors did at launch: $3.99. Abyssal has been discounted to $3.19 at 20% off, and it will be again. Primal Dread has not been discounted yet, and a first discount is unlikely in the first weeks.

That means the worst-case "overpay" is about eighty cents, eventually. Waiting a year for that is not a strategy; waiting a week to read reviews is.

What the reviews say, in aggregate

489 reviews on the DLC store page when checked on 4 November 2026, two days after launch. That is a sample of early adopters, and early reviews of a content DLC skew toward existing fans: the people who buy on day one already like the game.

The base game sits at a much larger review count, and the DLC's reception will settle over weeks. If you want a data-driven decision, wait for the review count to pass a few thousand. If you want to play this weekend, the content list above is the decision.

The short version: four dollars for a second map, ten characters and a stat that changes enemy behaviour is a fair price for anyone who still plays. It is a bad price for anyone who does not.

Deciding it against other four-dollar buys

Not Primal Dread against Abyssal Terrors, but Primal Dread against another four dollars of anything else. Twenty new waves with a new stat, ten characters and forty items is a weekend of play if you like the loop, and the loop is the thing you already own. That is the whole argument.
